With a bit more care (and basically splitting the songs up a lot) this could make a pretty good mashup. but they still clash a lot, because they both use a lot of random-ass notes from all over. So all this to say, in far too many words, both songs are centered around the same tone, in the same BPM. and now we have very specific connotations for that piece and similar sounds. At the time, it was a bombastic masculine ode to the glory days of roman gladiator arenas. The most famous and iconic example of this effect would be Julius Fucik's Entry Of The Gladiators.

This makes the melody pretty spicy, but more importantly, to western ears, we tend to think of chromaticism like this to carry a frivolous attitude. This means they're playing a lot of notes that aren't in the same key, or in the key of C, or in any specific key. Playing both at the same time leads to some dissonance here because Nyeh Heh Heh! likes to play the notes next to G when it's supposed to play a G.Īnd that leads to the question, what key is this? C? Both bass parts center heavily on C, but beyond that it's pretty hard to tell, because both songs are using chromaticism to carry that idea of a "goofy badguy". It's quite similar to Balrog's bassline, but with a bit more instability. Nyeh Heh Heh! Also features a bouncing bassline, starting on C, but instead of bouncing down to G, it bounces up to G, and each time it does, it "wiggles" around the G. Both feature a bouncing bassline: Balrogs theme is a bit simply, bouncing first from C to G, a very consonant interval, then walking down a whole step to bounce Bb to F, then back. Presented as a foe at first, but in a way that makes it clear they aren't going to end up as the big bad end guy or anything.īoth songs are up-tempo, set at 150 BPM. The purpose of the songs informs their design, and both songs serve the same purpose: background theme to a villain who really isn't that much of a threat, and is more. For the most part you will only need the former unless you have a specific technical application for the latter.įor the names of the org files/resources (like requiem, kodou, vivi, mura, etc.) as opposed to the name of the song this comparison guide should help. There's some dissonant moments in there, but overall the songs are really similar, and actually, that dissonance is to be expected despite the similarities. There is a version compatible with most trackers, of which individual downloads can be found below, or there is the original conversion from org to xm, which may have compatibility issues with some trackers such as Fastracker 2 and is kept for posterity.
